The state of Georgia has been affected by a terrible drought for a couple of years. Sonny Perdue, the governor of Georgia, declared a state of emergency in 85 of 159 counties during October 2007. This was mainly because Georgia’s bodies of water were close to being completely drained out. At the time, many actions were taken to help get rid of the drought. Citizens were only allowed to water their lawn on certain days, but people may now water their lawn three days a week. In 2009, Georgia Environmental Protection Division Director Carol Couch said, “The drought has ended. Our water supplies are flush. Our rivers and streams have rebounded."
There are many terrible effects of droughts. Some are hunger and famine, thirst, disease, and wildfires. Also, they harm the living creatures in the water. Without water, the population of aquatic creatures can easily decrease because they will probably wash up against the shore and consume few minerals because the water is nonexistent. Hunger and famine can occur because there is not enough water to grow crops. As a result, crops to feed animals and humans are scarce. Thirst can easily happen because every living being must have water, but food is not necessary. Disease is caused by lack of clean water and public sanitation. Wildfires are caused by low moisture that creates hazards in forests.
Although the drought is over, it does not mean that it cannot return. People must try their best to prevent water deficits. Some easy ways are to never leave the faucet running, make sure that there are not any leaks in pipes, and to put large loads of dishes in the dishwasher and large amounts of clothing in the washing machine. Also, take shorter showers and use low flow shower heads. For one hundred ways to save water, visit the website: http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php
