Kolkata formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.It is located on the east bank of the river Hooghly.

KOlkata has a Tropical wet and dry climate.The annual mean temperature is 24.8 °C (80 °F); monthly mean temperatures range from 15 °C to 30 °C (59 °F to 86 °F). Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the low 30's and during dry spells the maximum temperatures often exceed 40 °C during May and June.Kal Baisakhi or the Nor'westers is a local wind which dusty squalls followed by thunderstorms are experienced.The rainfall between June to September is brought by the Bay of Bengal branch of the South West Monsoon winds.Annual rainfall is about 1582mm.Winter is the most pleasant time in Kolkata. Effective winter tends to last for only about two and a half months,with seasonal lows dipping to 12°C between December and
January. Early morning mists are common in winter.

Pollution is a major concern in the city of Kolkata.Smog and haze are very common.
